Turkiye’s Road to Antalya 2025: President Karataş on Innovation, Sustainability, and Fencing’s Growth
With the European fencing community eagerly anticipating the 2025 Cadet and Junior European Championships, Turkiye is once again stepping onto the international stage as a premier host. Antalya, a city known for its stunning Mediterranean coastline, will welcome Europe’s brightest young fencers from February 23 to March 2, 2025. This championship marks a new milestone for Turkish fencing, showcasing the country’s growing presence in the sport and its ability to host top-tier events.
Significance of Antalya 2025
For Abdurrahman Karataş, President of the Turkish Fencing Federation, this event is not just another tournament; it is a testament to Turkiye’s commitment to fencing. Having successfully organized Senior and U23 European Championships in the past, the Turkish Federation is eager to elevate this competition, ensuring a seamless experience for athletes, coaches, and spectators alike.
“The European Championships in Antalya are particularly special for us,” says Karataş. “They mark the first major international event under our leadership since the recent elections. We want to set a new standard in organization, logistics, and the overall experience for participants.”
Organizational Challenges and Solutions
Hosting a championship of this scale requires meticulous planning. The Turkish Fencing Federation has worked tirelessly to address logistical challenges, including travel coordination and accommodations for delegations from across Europe. Their goal is clear—to create an event that is both memorable and efficiently run.
Innovations and Sustainability Initiatives
Beyond the competition, Antalya 2025 aims to bring fresh innovations to the European fencing circuit. Karataş highlights planned initiatives, such as enhanced digital engagement, interactive fan zones, and a strong emphasis on sustainability. “We want to do more than just host a championship; we want to use this platform to promote responsible resource consumption, recycling initiatives, and a forward-thinking approach to event organization,” he adds.
Community Engagement and Promotion
Engaging local communities is another priority. Schools across Antalya will be invited to experience fencing up close, with interactive stations set up to introduce children to the sport. By creating a dynamic and welcoming environment, the organizers hope to inspire a new generation of Turkish fencers and grow the sport’s visibility in the region.
Turkish National Team’s Goals
For Turkiye’s national team, competing on home soil presents both an opportunity and a challenge. The nation has already secured medals in previous European Championships, and expectations remain high. “We have ambitious goals,” says Karataş. “Our dream is to see Turkish fencers on the podium in all three weapons—epee, foil, and sabre.”
Long-Term Impact on Turkish Fencing
Looking beyond 2025, this championship is a strategic step for Turkiye in cementing its position within the international fencing community. The Turkish Fencing Federation is actively working on expanding international partnerships and strengthening its athlete development programs. By successfully hosting this event, Turkiye hopes to demonstrate its capability to organize future high-profile tournaments and further integrate into the global fencing network.
