Romania strikes gold in Women’s Team Sabre

As in the men’s epee team competition, the final was a rematch from 2022 between Romania and Hungary with the former emerging victorious 45-40 to claim the country’s third medal of the championships.

Romania - Rosemarie Benciu, Amalia Covaliu, Anastasia Fusea and Alexandra Mitrus - were awarded the first seed after a splendid performance in the individual competition. They clinched their spot in the final after wins against Azerbaijan 45-31 and Italy 45-38.

Hungary, consisting of individual champion Emese Domonkos, Nadin Toth, Csenge Konya and Dorottya Csonka started the day off with a 45-12 win over Israel in the round of 16. They then reached the final after beating Germany 45-20 and Poland 45-34.

As usual in sabre, the final was packed with action. After an initial 15-13 result in favour of Hungary, Romanian fencer Mitrus won the fourth bout 7-0 to bring Romania into a five-point lead. From there Romania never let go of the gas and could crown themselves European Championships after the 45-40 win.

In the bronze match Italy – Elisabetta Borreli, Gaia Karola Carafa, Benedetta Stangoni, Giada Likaj - beat Poland 45-42 to claim the 3rd place medal.
