BEYOND THE COMPETITIONS

Interview for the President of the Irish Fencing Federation, Ursula Kappus

  1. What significance do you think initiatives like Solidarity Programme hold for a small federation such as yours?

For smaller federations like Fencing Ireland, the Solidarity Programme is incredibly valuable. It gives us access to high-level expertise, not just in coaching but across other sectors too. For our coaching course, specifically, it was a wonderful opportunity to work closely with the Italian Fencing Federation, strengthening our friendship and collaboration. The chance to learn from the world-class master coaches they provided is something we wouldn’t have had access to otherwise, allowing us to increase the standard of coaching and directly benefitting our athletes. Quite apart from the technical skills, it’s about connecting with the wider European Fencing community. It reminds us that even though we’re small, we’re a part of something much bigger. It’s a chance to grow together, strengthen ties, and ensure that we can continue to improve, both on and off the piste.

  • What goals did the Irish Fencing Federation set for itself when hosting this event?

Our main objective was to give our coaches the opportunity to exchange knowledge and learn from not only the Master Coaches but also their fellow participants, something that will have a real impact on the development of our fencers. We also wanted to show Ireland as a committed and engaged member of the European Fencing family, and wanted to create an event that would resonate long after it ended, by sharing knowledge and strengthening relationships.

  • What long-term prospects do you see as a result of participating in such projects?

In the long run, participation in the Solidarity Programme is a game changer for us. As our coaches bring back new skills and ideas, our fencers benefit, and the overall quality of fencing in Ireland improves. This helps us become more competitive on the international stage, and that’s a big goal for us. Plus, the connections we’ve made through this programme will open doors for future collaboration—whether it’s joint training camps, competitions, or even just exchanging new ideas and practices. Projects like this lay the foundation for sustainable growth and keep us connected to the wider European fencing community. But it’s not just about the coaching—we’re also strengthening our overall federation. The Solidarity Programme covers many different areas, from safeguarding to management, which helps us operate more effectively and ensures that we’re providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone involved.

  1. How do you evaluate the contribution of this event to the development of Irish fencing?

The coaching course has a significant, direct impact on the development of Irish fencing. When our coaches gain new insights and techniques, they take that knowledge back to their clubs and fencers, raising the overall standard of training in Ireland. This course has been an investment in the future of Irish fencing - strong coaching is at the heart of a successful, sustainable fencing nation. In addition, the connections made with other coaches across Europe have really stuck. They’ve been keeping in touch regularly, with plans for meet-ups and more chances to keep learning from each other. This provides many more opportunities for development and learning in the future.

  • Do you see positive changes among the coaches or athletes who participated in the program?

Absolutely. We’ve already noticed a real boost in enthusiasm and confidence among the coaches who participated. They’ve come away with new strategies, a deeper understanding of technique, and fresh ideas for their training sessions. They’re also more connected to the broader European fencing community, which brings a sense of excitement and possibility.

  1. Which aspects of the Solidarity Programme do you consider the most valuable?

For me, the major benefit of the Solidarity Programme is being able to access to expertise from other fencing nations. Each country has its own strengths and specialties when it comes to any aspects of fencing, and tapping into that knowledge is invaluable for growth and development, especially for smaller federations like ours. Another huge benefit is the chance to strengthen the sense of unity within European fencing. In a world that often feels more divided, it’s so important to have opportunities where we can come together, share ideas, and support each other.

  • In your opinion, what makes it unique in the context of fencing development?

What makes the Solidarity Programme unique is its focus on collective growth. It’s not just about improving individual skills or even just about one country—it’s about developing the entire fencing community across Europe. This programme provides a platform for shared learning and mutual support, which is crucial for all federations, no matter their size. It’s about collaboration, not competition, and that’s what really sets it apart in the context of fencing development.

  1. How important do you think such international collaborations are for strengthening the European fencing community?

These international collaborations are absolutely essential for strengthening the European fencing community. Competition should be reserved for the piste, as federations behind the scenes, we should be striving for unity and collaboration. With so much discord in the world already, it’s essential that we come together. When we support one another, the collective strength of the European fencing community is undeniable. Collaboration helps raise the standard of the sport, not just in terms of technique but also in governance, safety, and development. A united community leads to more opportunities and a more vibrant, sustainable future for fencing in Europe.

  • How do they affect the perception of Ireland as a fencing nation?

On the international circuit, Ireland is still represented quite sporadically, although we’re certainly improving. Being an island on the outskirts of Europe does make it a bit tricky to travel regularly, but we’re working on it. Participating in collaborative initiatives like the Solidarity Programme gives us a valuable opportunity to showcase Ireland as a fencing nation. It’s a chance to share our skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm, while also reminding our fellow nations that we’re here and committed to growing the sport. It helps elevate our profile and reminds people that we’re a part of this European fencing family.

  1. If you could address other countries considering participation in the Solidarity Programme, what would you say to them?

I’d say stop considering and just do it! This programme offers such a unique opportunity to learn from one another and truly experience what it means to be part of the European Fencing family. It’s a chance to grow together, share expertise, and build connections that extend far beyond the course itself. You’re not just improving your federation; you’re strengthening the entire fencing community. If you’re serious about developing fencing in your country, this is the best way to get involved and make a lasting impact.

  • Why do you think they should take part in this initiative?

The benefits of getting involved in the Solidarity Programme go well beyond just improving skills or gaining knowledge. Of course, you’ll see immediate impacts —whether that’s from refining coaching techniques, improving governance, or strengthening safeguarding practices, to name just a few of the courses that have taken place— but the real value is in what comes next. It’s about building lasting relationships with your European peers and creating opportunities for collaboration that continue long after the programme. And last but certainly not least, it’s about playing a part in the future of fencing, both at home and across Europe. By getting involved, you’re helping to create a more united, supportive fencing community where everyone can learn, grow, and succeed together.
