Outstanding Performances Mark U23 Events in Antony and Budapest 

The Under-23 European Circuit continued its journey through the continent with two thrilling events held in Antony, France, and Budapest, Hungary, over the past weekend. In Antony, the spotlight was on foil competitions, where emerging fencers delivered captivating performances in both individual and team events. Meanwhile, Budapest prepared to host sabre fencers, promising another weekend of top-tier action. 

EFC FFE Circuit in Antony, France 

In the men’s individual event, David Williams of Great Britain emerged victorious after a strong run through the competition, overcoming Amaury Corberand of France in the final. Callum Penman, also representing Great Britain, secured a podium finish alongside Álvaro Marcos Peral from Spain, as both fencers claimed bronze. 

The women’s foil final was an all-Italian affair, with Carlotta Ferrari taking the gold ahead of her compatriot Margherita Lorenzi. Meanwhile, Pauline Le Chanjour from France and another Italian, Matilde Calvanese, joined the podium with well-earned bronze medals. 

In the team competitions, Great Britain secured victory in the men’s foil event, with a squad featuring Mihkel Archer, Alberto Mascioli, Callum Penman, and Dario Stenbeck-Schiavo. They overcame a determined Spanish team, which included Germán Ferreiro, San Kim, Álvaro Marcos Peral, and Esteban Peressini Torregrosa, while France finished third, ensuring a home podium presence. 

The women’s team event saw France dominate on home soil, with a composed performance from Esther Bonny, Maïlys Dansicare, Eloïse Goutenegre, and Emma Mika, who claimed the gold. The Netherlands, with a strong showing from their fencers, finished second, while Great Britain rounded off the podium, adding another medal to their successful weekend. 

 

Under-23 European Circuit in Budapest 

The Under-23 European Circuit in Budapest saw a commanding performance from Hungarian sabreurs, who claimed all podium spots in both the men’s and women’s competitions. 

In the men’s event, Nicolas Iliasz of DEAC showcased his experience and skill, securing the gold medal after a strong performance in the final against Benedek Dallos of VASAS, who finished with silver. The bronze medals went to Zsadány Papp of BVSC and Kristóf Nagy of UTE, both delivering impressive displays throughout the competition.

The women’s tournament followed a similar pattern, with Sugar Katinka Battai of DEAC emerging victorious after overcoming Renáta Katona of VASAS in a closely contested final. The bronze medals were claimed by Liza Pusztai and Kira Keszei, both representing BVSC, as they demonstrated strong tactical fencing in their battles for the podium.

What’s Next? 

The pace of the season remains relentless as the Under-23 European Circuit continues in Budapest next weekend, this time featuring épée competitions for both men and women. This tournament will be another crucial opportunity for fencers to gain experience and ranking points ahead of major upcoming championships. 

Following that, attention shifts to Antalya, Turkey, where the Cadet European Championships (U17) will take place from February 23 to 26. The event will bring together Europe’s most promising young talents in foil, épée, and sabre, offering a first glimpse at future senior champions.
